Why ReJournal keeps your videos on your phone

A video diary holds the most personal footage you own. Here is where ReJournal stores it, what does reach our servers, and what happens when you delete your account.

ReJournal asks for one thing each day: a 30-second video of something real. Over a month that becomes a short film of your life, and over a year it becomes something you would not want to lose or share by accident. That is why we made one decision early and have kept it since: your videos stay on your phone.

Where your clips live

When you record a clip, ReJournal saves the video and its thumbnail in the app's storage on your device. The month view, the streaks and the recap you can watch at the end of a month are all built on the device from those files. We do not upload your clips, and nobody at Codereltech can watch them.

Your profile name and photo work the same way. They are shown in the app, and they are stored only on your phone.

What does reach our servers

ReJournal still needs a small backend, mostly so your subscription follows you when you sign in on a new phone. When you create an account, our server keeps:

  • your sign-in email and the method you used (Apple, Google, Facebook or email),
  • whether you have an active subscription,
  • if you redeem a promo code, which code was used and the network (IP) address it came from.

That is all. No clips, no thumbnails, no profile name or photo.

If you choose to share usage statistics when the app asks, we also see which screens are used and where the app gets stuck. You can switch this off at any time in Settings.

The trade-off

Keeping videos on the device has a cost: if you lose your phone and have no backup, the clips are gone, because we never had a copy. Depending on your phone's settings, your operating system's own backup may include them. That backup is controlled by you and by Apple or Google, not by us.

We think this is the right trade for a diary. A cloud copy would be convenient, but it would also mean holding hours of personal footage on a server, and that is not something a daily journal should need.

Deleting everything

If you delete your account in Settings, ReJournal removes your sign-in and the videos stored in the app on that device. To remove the small account record described above from our server as well, email [email protected] and we will delete it.

If you just want to start over, you can also delete individual clips at any time from the month view.
